The History

The History

Industry Neighborhood, just south of the business district in Muncie, IN historically has included lower income families living in housing that was interspersed with industrial and retail facilities. The 279 unit Munsyana Homes Public housing Development was built in the late 1930's to meet the needs of low income residents.

By the 1970's Munsyanna Homes was in decline and urban vice began to get a foothold in the area. Despite periodic investment in the development, the area continued to decline and it became clear that purposeful intervention would be needed to revitalize this area. In the mid-1990's The Muncie Housing Authority and other entities began applying for HUD sponsored assistance including a HOPE VI grant.

The Future

In 2002, the Muncie Housing Authority was granted HOPE VI funding for the Millennium Place Revitalization Plan. By partnering with other private and public entities, the Muncie Housing Authority is executing an ambitious $40 Million effort to create a vibrant, mixed income neighborhood with both private and public economic investment and growth. By 2007, Millennium Place will feature some of the finest housing available in Muncie, IN. Not only will there be full occupancy, but there is currently a growing waiting list of renters and buyers seek to move into what was once a blighted neighborhood.
